Giants owner John Mara spoke to the media today after finishing 2024 with a 3-14 record. It will guarantee that Big Blue owns the third overall pick in this year’s draft. Even more pressing than that however, is who remains after this train wreck of a season. And somehow, it will be both Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen. To make matters worse, he made a fool out of himself in front of the media earlier:
Remember, when the game was still within reach yesterday Brian Daboll put in Jalin Hyatt over Malik Nabers. Schoen laughed in his face when he said he was worried about losing Saquon to Philly. And now #26 will likely win Offensive Player of the Year in green instead of blue. Mara has every excuse in the book to get rid of them but doesn’t want to rock the boat. Younger, hungrier owners would have had both guys out the door before Week 18 even ended. It’s clear Mara is a problem for his own team.
This season has a very good case of being the worst in Giants’ history. It had the complete package of embarrassment after embarrassment. Barely missing out on losing every home game of the season. An anemic offense. A defense who lost just about every starter due to injury. A carousel at QB including cutting Daniel Jones. All the while watching two former homegrown players shine on different NFC teams.
Anyone who knew the context behind all of this should not be surprised. If you don’t know it, watch this video. Trey and I broke down the mess this team made months ago. There is no world that Joe Schoen should be in charge of this team or any in the NFL. His draft record alone stinks. He is purely a needs based drafter and a poor evaluator at that.
Remember that he squandered elite draft capital in 2023 for an absolute disastrous haul of Deonte Banks, John Michael Schmitz, Hyatt, and Eric Gray with his first four picks. He completely overpaid for Brian Burns, who is good but not great. There’s a chance he doesn’t even communicate with his coaching staff.
With all of this in mind, how is Mara letting this guy keep running his team? It is so clear that 2022 was a complete anomaly and any of the contributors from that squad have since been moved out. Everyone knows that this team needs a quarterback. And if this team just sits at #3 and takes Shedeur Sanders, then every egg will be in that basket. My personal opinion is that Cam Ward has a brighter future in the NFL than Sanders. However, none of that matters since either the Titans or Browns must take him if they’re not stupid. Now is a great opportunity to trade back and acquire one of the Tier-2 QBs instead of sitting and reaching. Despite that, there is little evidence we can trust Joe Schoen will do that.
What’s even crazier is that it can most definitely get worse. If Big Blue gets off to another horrific start in 2025 Mara will almost certainly give them the boot. Something that should have been done already. For now, John Mara is living in crazy town and New York Giants fans are the ones who must suffer for it.
