Lesson number one professional sports owners fail to realize. Just because said player was elite at a particular sport does not mean they know how to evaluate talent or build a team. AKA LeBron James, John Elway, etc. The Broncos couldn’t ever solve the quarterback issue why Elway was in charge and it’s why he’s not running things today. Those QB misses by Elway are well-documented at this point.
Elway didn’t pull any punches. He fully admits his biggest mistake was passing on Josh Allen during the 2018 NFL Draft. Denver, of course, selected Bradley Chubb out of NC State that year. In fairness, they later cashed in Chubb for another first round pick down the line in a deal with Miami.
“Last year I played [golf] with him and I’m wondering, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead?’ And it took him two and a half holes,” Elway recalled during a recent appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon my Take” podcast.
“And I loved him. But it just didn’t work out. He was my type. That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days, was not taking Josh.”
I hate to brag because it’s not necessary but I wouldn’t have passed on Josh Allen and that’s very well documented. Can we get Elway to write me a letter of recommendation? Maybe Trey from the couch can scout quarterbacks better than one of the greatest to ever play the game? Why don’t these teams call me more again?
