It’s the Fourth of July, which as many of us know is when the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is held–a time when Joey Chestnut gets to show off to the world just how dominant of an eater he is. His domination has been so significant that I dare argue that he is the greatest athlete of all time.
Usually when thinking about the world’s greatest athletes you think of names like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Michael Phelps or people of that nature. All very fair names are worthy of said title. But I argue that non of those names listed have dominated on the level of Chestnut.
He has now won it 16 times and it’s not even really a competition anymore, more just an event to see just how many hotdogs Chestnut can eat in a 10-minute period. I usually don’t care at all about competitive eating but every fourth of July I’m watching Joey Chestnut destroy some glizzys.
It’s basically an American tradition at this point and watching him dominant is something that will never get old. The funny thing is, he won this year on a down year by his standards. He downed 62, a full 13 more than the runner-up. But that’s not even close to his full potential.
Back in 2021, we saw him down 76 in a masterclass performance. Last year, he showed his skills off by downing 63 while stopping a protestor by putting him in a chokehold. I mean come on it doesn’t get much better than that.
You’ve seen Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods dominate before. But have you seen them display that domination why subduing someone into a chokehold? I didn’t think so.

Hell, even the outside forces of mother nature couldn’t stop this man. Lightning storms put the contest on delay with the fear that it might even get canceled and be shot on a different day. But after a two-hour delay things we back on track.
Most people would be thrown off by a two-hour delay, but not old Joey Chesnut. If anything, it just widened the already existing gap between him and the competition.
Next time you are having your debates about the greatest athlete of all time, keep Joey’s name in your mind. You think it’s a joke but no other man has dominated his respective sport like Joey Chestnut has.
Put some respect on his name. And before you make fun of this and call it stupid, I challenge you to eat 60-plus hot dogs in just 10 minutes. Yeah, I didn’t think so.
But in all seriousness a Happy Fourth to everybody reading this! I hope you all are having a great time with family and friends grilling some burgers and hot dogs. If you aren’t…. well then I question your sanity as an American citizen.
