In September, the Boston Celtics named Joe Mazzulla the interim coach after a hiatus with former coach Ime Udoka. But now, the C’s have just promoted the former West Virginia basketball star to head coach, according to the team’s Twitter.
In just a short time span, Mazzulla has been killing it with the C’s. He has earned the trust and contentment of the historic franchise. As of right now, the boys in Boston are on top of not only the Eastern Conference, but the entire NBA itself. Heading into NBA All-Star break, the Celtics hold a record of 42-17.
Former Celtics head coach and now president of basketball operations Brad Stevens made comments on Mazzulla.
“One of the things that’s pretty obvious and evident about Joe is he’s a really good coach and he’s also just an outstanding leader,” Stevens said during a conference call with the media Thursday evening, via Celtics’ press release. “I think he’s done a great job, right from the get-go of, galvanizing a locker room around a mission.“
Mazzulla would later go onto make comments on being the official head coach for the Celtics.
“I’m just grateful,” Mazzulla said, via Celtics’ press release. “Grateful that not many people get an opportunity to experience this, especially in the manner that I am with the players that I’m able to coach and the people I’m able to work for, and it’s for the Celtics. It is a dream come true, for sure.”
As a lifelong fan of the C’s, I think this is a great hire by the organization. Mazzulla is not only a great coach, but a great guy as well. The way he has been coaching this team has been excellent. I can’t wait for what’s to come for them.
