Joe Flacco Says Browns Never Made Him An Offer After 2023 Season

After Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson went down with an injury during Sunday’s game, backup QB Joe Flacco stepped in and saved the day. Flacco led the Colts to a 27-24 victory over the then-undefeated Steelers.

This isn’t anything new for Flacco, as he stepped in and saved the Browns season last year. Cleveland went to the Wild Card round of the playoffs, which is big news for them. The city and team rallied around him last year, so you would think they would have offered him a contract extension, right? Wrong!

While appearing on Pro Football Talk, Flacco told Mike Florio that the Browns never offered him a contract to be Deshaun Watson’s backup. This seems odd when Flacco more than proved he was worthy of the role. Hell, if you are comparing his and Watson’s stats, Flacco should start over him.

In 2024, Watson has thrown for just 727 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He has completed 61.5 percent of his passes and taken 19 sacks.Though his QBR of 23.7 ranks him dead last in the NFL and he is a major reason for Cleveland’s 1-3 start.

In five starts last year, Flacco threw for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He went 4-1 as the Browns’ starter. Now, these numbers aren’t going to blow anyone’s mind, but he played vastly better than Watson has. In addition, Joe Flacco is way cheaper than Watson, who has a $230 Million fully guaranteed contract. Cleveland decided to roll with Jameis Winston as the team’s backup, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he started for them sooner rather than later. This, of course, is because of Watson’s brutal play this year.

We’re not doing enough,” Watson said recently when speaking to reporters. “So it starts with me. If I’m going to be the quarterback of this offense, we’ve all got to be all the way locked in, and right now we’re not doing enough to get the W. So you can put it on me for sure.”

We will see if this is all talk or if Watson finally starts playing well, which he hasn’t in four years now, and lives up to that massive contract.
