What a roller coaster ride it has been for Jim Irsay and the Indianapolis Colts over the past year and a half.
Before the 2021 NFL Season, with Philip Rivers set to retire, Jim Irsay made a massive move in trading for Carson Wentz. Many people thought that this experiment would either show what a genius Irsay was or prove that maybe Wentz really was done for. 2021 was a unique year for Wentz and the Colts. Wentz threw for 3,563 yards, 27 TDs, and 7 INTs. Those stats are marginal at best, and the Colts finished 9-8, ending the year with an embarrassing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that knocked them out of a playoff spot.
According to Jim Irsay, it was “very obvious” the two parties should separate.

“It’s just, for us, it was just it was something that we had to move away from as a franchise — it was very obvious,” Irsay said of the Wentz trade, via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com.
Irsay went on to explain that they explored all options in regards to finding a new QB to play for the Colts, but it was clear that Wentz would not see another year in Indy.
Jim Irsay went on to find his guy in Matt Ryan, trading for the 36-year-old just over a week ago. This will be the fourth starting QB in the last 4 years for the Indianapolis Colts, and Ryan can’t be a long-term option either. Where will this Colts team go after this? Can Ryan win the division? Does he have any value left? It will be very interesting to watch this Colts team this year, and if this experiment fails yet again, Jim Irsay will have a lot of explaining to do.
