In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, Jim Harbaugh split from Michigan after winning the National Championship for the NFL to join the Los Angeles Chargers. You’d think the quarterback he would want to talk about nonstop is his current guy Justin Herbert, but you’d be mistaken.
It seems all Harbaugh can talk about is his former QB at Michigan J.J. McCarthy. He has been singing his praises since he signed in LA, going as far as to say he wouldn’t be surprised if he was the first QB taken in the draft. Where there’s smoke there may be fire.
NBC Boston’s Mike Giardi in an interview said that McCarthy is “definitely” moving up draft boards. He would say in the interview that not going to the Senior Bowl helped his cause as Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. failed to impress (which I can validate as I was in Mobile again this year). But I can’t help but feel that Harbaugh is helping McCarthy earn more money.
Think about it. Your former head coach talking about you non-stop, telling everyone who will listen about how great you are, surely someone is going to talk themselves into him if Harbaugh talks enough. It makes you wonder if McCarthy would be as high if Jim Harbaugh wasn’t constantly talking about him.
JJ McCarthy doesn’t deserve even to sniff the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, yet if this media circus around him continues he is likely to hear his name called on day one. If this does happen, I hope McCarthy cuts Harbaugh a huge check as a thank-you for raising his stock as much as he has in the past few weeks.
