It appears that the New York Jets have zeroed in on their next quarterback. The Jets are likely going to forgo drafting a quarterback and eye the veteran market. Kirk Cousins is the number one target for New York and Jets have every intention to be super aggressive in their pursuit to land him.
Rich Cimini of ESPN had the following:
“It’s simple: Get Cousins. The Jets want him badly, and sources say they’re willing to pay whatever it takes — unless the Washington Redskins decide to tag him for a third time (unlikely). Money aside, the Jets hope to convince him he’ll have a chance to win in New York. Because of obvious deficiencies on the current roster, they must sell him a championship vision. Their recruiting pitch also will stress his familiarity with the offensive system. In addition to making Cousins wildly rich, the Jets want to let him know he’ll be comfortable with the scheme and coaches.”
Despite his career record of 26-30-1, Cousins will have a robust market in free agency. The Browns, Broncos, Cardinals, and others will likely join the Jets in the pursuit of the veteran quarterback. However, with $70 plus million in cap space, if the Jets want him, they can have him. Cousins, 29, might be in line for an enormous payday despite being mediocre.
Cousins could be the man that replaces Josh McCown. If the Jets miss out, Tyrod Taylor, A.J. McCarron, or a quarterback in the draft could be a possible option. It’s unclear if the Jets were in the mix for Alex Smith but he is now off the table after he was dealt to the Redskins.
