Someone watched the Broncos’ offense this past year and was impressed! Kudos to Nathaniel Hackett for getting another job after Denver axed him. After letting Mike LaFleur go, the Jets have hired Hackett to become the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Russell Wilson just had the worst season of his career with the Broncos under the tutelage of Hackett. Wilson, 34, completed a career-worst 60.5% of his throws while sporting a 16 to 11 TD to INT ratio. Three of those touchdowns came in the final week of the season when Hackett was no longer on the sidelines.
Did LaFluer really deserve to get fired or is Zach Wilson just bad? Might be a fair question to ask. Mike White fared better but for sure isn’t a long term option at the position. It remains to be seen what the Jets will do at quarterback this upcoming year. It’s safe to say they will bring in a new face at minimum.
Hackett’s best year as a coordinator came with the Jaguars when he helped guide Jacksonville to the AFC Title game with Blake Borltes as his quarterback in 2017. The following year, Hackett was fired after a seven game losing streak. It may be fair to suggest Jacksonville only advanced because of their defense in 2017.
This is a fascinating hire. I can’t believe anyone watched Denver’s offense this past year and gave the keys to Hackett again to run another offense. My guess would have been a return to Green Bay as the quarterback coach.
