It’s maybe safe to say that the fans of the Houston Astros already forgot about their former star shortstop Carlos Correa. The man served his term and did a fine job both offensively and defensively, but now a younger man fills the void and that’s Jeremy Peña.
Peña, 25, is a rookie but has so much going for him. Not only is he now a World Series champion, he’s also the ALCS MVP, the World Series MVP and has a Gold Glove. He also posted a 4.8 WAR and hit 22 home runs during the regular season. All in all, his future shines very brightly.
Correa posted eerily similar stats to Peña in his rookie year as an Astro in 2015. His WAR was at an identical 4.8 and he ALSO hit 22 homers. No, the 2015 Houston team didn’t wind up in the Fall Classic, but he helped lead them to their first championship in 2017.
Peña is amongst a group of young Astros players who are bringing the team into the new decade. He joins Framber Valdez, Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker in proving to everyone that they don’t need to rely on older guys like Yuli Gurriel and Justin Verlander to win ballgames.
Many assumed losing Correa would mark a drop-off for the Houston Astros team for the shortstop position. In seven seasons, after all, he slashed a very respectable .277/.356/.481 with 133 homers. He ended up having a very solid year with Minnesota.
Regardless, the ceiling is very high for Jeremy Peña. Since he’s able to perform at the most complex level and win the most important games, he could be looking at a hefty contract extension. As his role solidifies with him in a such deep lineup, his regular season numbers could spring even further upward.
