JD Martinez Took Less Money To Sign With Dodgers

JD Martinez told you exactly what he thinks about this Chaim Bloom led Red Sox team. They’re pretenders, not contenders. We learned a little more about why JD chose the Dodgers in free agency after signing a one-year deal with Los Angeles. It’s a total indictment on this current Red Sox brass. Get ready for it.

VIA The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (as I say with all these Athletic links. Do not click. It’s behind paywall. I just am required to provide my works cited. We don’t support those people. It’s just where the information came from).

“(Dodgers president of baseball operations) Andrew Friedman and Mookie were like college coaches seeking the big recruit,” Boras told Rosenthal. “J.D. was fully aware of the recent signings and took $6 million to $7 million below his value.

“He wanted to win and he wanted to (optimize his ability),” Boras told Rosenthal. “He felt the Dodgers were the best team to help him achieve those goals. He made them fully aware he has every intention to play well and seek his true value in the seasons ahead.”

It’s unclear where the Red Sox stood in talks but they shifted focus pretty quickly to Justin Turner. Maybe they just wanted Turner the entire time because they paid a pretty penny for him (two years including a player option for $22 million).

After Boston passed on offering JD the qualifying offer, it sounds like he was pretty set on joining the Dodgers. It should tell you everything you need to know.

Dodgers = real World Series contenders.

Red Sox = brain dead idiots on the verge of letting a third superstar talent leave.
