JD Davison Credits Marcus Smart For His Development
Marcus Smart is gone but not forgotten. Derrick White recently spoke about how much Smart meant to him and the Celtics organization. Former Alabama product JD Davison has now done the same. Davison, the former 53rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has credited Smart for his development as a player.
Davison says because of Smart, it’s helped him become more of a vocal leader on the court.
“I started working on it once I got here last year,” Davison said of his voice. “Summer League you’re trying to talk with everybody. You know me, I’m kind of a quiet person. Just watching guys like (Marcus) Smart, he’s a more talkative guy in the gym, every day. So just watching a guy like him and just being a backup to him has helped me out a lot.”
Davison, 20, now enters his second professional season and is set to be part of the Celtics Summer League team. The Celtics should be really encouraged with what they saw with Davison as a rookie. He was one of the better playmakers in the G League as a 19-year-old posting 7.7 assists per game. Davison also averaged 13.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. That’s while shooting over 50% from the floor.
Someone needs to replace those Marcus Smart minutes. It appears that Payton Pritchard will function as the third point guard this year but he’s been on the trade block. Davison feels poised to play on a two-way deal again but could become a point guard option for Boston down the road with a bit more seasoning. Time will tell on that front.
