JC Tretter, former center for the Packers and Browns and current president of the NFL Players Association, is very upset following Tua Tagovailoa’s injury Thursday night. In a post on Twitter, Tretter expressed his feelings toward the situation saying, “We are all outraged by what we have seen the last several days and scared for the safety of one of our brothers.”
Tagovailoa went down Thursday night and appeared to be knocked unconscious. The injury came just four days after he was put into the NFL’s concussion protocol on Sunday. Tagovailoa has since been released from the hospital and will undergo further evaluation.
People are upset by the fact that Tagovailoa even played last night considering his injury just a few days ago. Many feel as though the Dolphins’ coaching and training staff should be held accountable. Tretter feels as though it was a “failure in medical judgment” by the team’s training staff. He feels it is imperative to figure out how and why the decision was made to allow Tagovailoa to get back on the field following his first injury. Tretter also commented that what Tagovailoa had on Sunday is considered a “no-go” symptom in terms of returning to play.
As president of the NFLPA, Tretter has obvious reasons to be upset with the situation. The NFL themselves claim that the concussion protocol did not fail Tagovailoa on Sunday. Tretter openly disagreed in his statement on Twitter saying, “We have come a long way over the past 15 years but last week proves how far we have left to go.”
If it was not before, it will obviously be a top priority now of the NFL and NFLPA to monitor the well-being of their players more closely. When asked about the idea of putting Tagovailoa on the IR, coach Mike McDaniel said that he is not thinking of timetables as a player, but instead of Tua as a person.
Tretter’s statement on Twitter shows the true outrage that has come with this situation. JC Tretter’s outrage towards the situation shows that he believes they have failed, and an improvement must be made.
