The NBA All-Star weekend might be a joke but at least someone is taking at least one part of the festivities seriously. Jaylen Brown stepped up to the plate participating in the 2024 NBA Dunk Contest. In the aftermath following the event, the Celtics’ superstar talked about how important the Dunk Contest is to him.
VIA Souichi Terada of Masslive.com:
“If nobody else cares to do it, (expletive) it, I’ll do it again,” Brown said. “I don’t really care. People think like memes and stuff. But like I said, I think dunking is an art form. Obviously, I think I got more in the tank than what I displayed. I think I could perform better. I had a great time.”
Brown, 27, finished behind Mac McClung who has now won it for a second consecutive year. Not that what McClung did wasn’t impressive. It just doesn’t pack the same punch considering that McClung is an unknown and he currently plays in the G-League.
The hope is that others step up to the plate. Credit to Brown for taking charge and participating. If All-Star weekend is going to be saved, it’s going to take my players like Brown buying in.
LeBron James ruined the dunk contest. I’m not sure I can be convinced off this take. Back in the day, all the top dogs participated. As soon as LeBron pulled one of his many crybaby stints, it took all the oxygen out of the event.
