I think Jay Monahan is currently the odds-on favorite of being the biggest idiot of 2023 so far. ICYMI, people all over the world, sports and beyond, are blasting the PGA Commissioner for selling out to LIV Golf by partnering. As a golf fan myself, this is an incredibly tough subject.
Yes, this deal has the chance to finally give the game the exposure and resources it needs to compete in the digital age. But, Monahan crossed one of the worst lines possible, and I cannot forgive him for that.
Of course, he is trying his best to do damage control. He has already backtracked and tried to pander to the golfers who legitimately had his back. But actions here speak far louder than words. This is one of the worst attempts at a cash grab I have seen in sports; the whole issue here is transparency.
This was a case of Monahan trying to have his cake and eat it too. If he had just been honest and addressed the public about the money involved, then maybe we could’ve listened. But no, he decides to take the money and run less than a year after using the September 11th attacks as ammunition against LIV. This is hypocrisy at its absolute worst.
There are just about no defenders of Jay Monahan at this time (well, maybe one), and to be frank, there shouldn’t be. I don’t care if golf’s ratings skyrocket past the NBA and NFL in the years to come, there is just no conceivable way he deserves this job anymore. It makes no sense how he publicly shamed LIV while also holding secret meetings with them.
Monahan has deservedly taken fire from all sides, not just the families of 9/11 victims. The golfers that stood by him, members of the media and even politicians. It is nothing but a slimy and disgusting move. The only thing he deserves is to crawl under a rock and never get out from underneath it. He should go back to those families and look them in the eye and tell them the truth.
I think the only way Jay Monahan can get some of the heat off of him is to step down as PGA commissioner. Use whatever accountability he has left and tell everyone the truth.
