Javon Baker thought the NFL teams that chose WRs ahead of him were out of their minds. He simply couldn’t believe that there were 17 WRs that were better than him in the NFL Draft. He might be right … 17 WRs is a lot of WRs, but at the same time, this was a loaded WR class.
Maybe there were 17 WRs ahead of him that are better, but that doesn’t mean it will be like that for long. Javon Baker surely is using this as motivation. Here’s one of the simple but direct quotes that Javon Baker said as provided by Pro Football Talk:
“No way in fucking America 10 receivers better than me. You’re out of your fucking mind.”
-Javon Baker
There’s also a video of him talking about this. He is clearly using this to already get a headstart on having a successful start to the NFL season.
17 WRs were chosen in front of Javon Baker, but he believes that there weren’t even 10 WRs better than him in the draft. Now, I can’t confidently say that he should have been a top 10 WR in this year’s draft, but I can say that some players did not deserve to go over him: Malachi Corley, Troy Franklin, Jermaine Burton and Jalen McMillan to name a few. I would be mad too if I was Baker and these guys went ahead of me.
Personally, though, Baker is in a good spot to prove his point. The Patriots’ WR room is less than ideal. I would argue that he and fellow rookie teammate Ja’Lynn Polk might be the best WRs on the team. With No. 2 overall pick Drake Maye throwing the ball too, Baker might have a great rookie season to start his campaign of being overlooked.
