Javier Baez sucks. He’s always been bad. I don’t know why anyone believed otherwise but that’s the cold hard fact. Al Avila got fired this year and his decision to hand Baez a six-year, $140 million contract was the nail in the coffin.
Who thought this contract was going to end well? Did anybody believe in this deal? Even if you liked Baez, handing $140 million to a player that has the worst swing discipline in the league was never going to age well. If you couldn’t figure that out back then, I’m not sure there’s much help for you.
Don’t worry, I have more for you because I want to paint the full picture. Strikes out all the time, addicted to committing stupid errors, never gets on base. That’s who Javier Baez is. AKA not a good baseball player.
147 strikeouts last year. Hey, that was actually down from 184 last year when he led the league. It’s always going to be the case because he swings at trash all the time.
Don’t care what the fielding metrics say. 26 errors last year is not okay.
.278 on-base percentage this year. It is what it is when you swing at anything. Baez is worse than a drunk guy at a bar. Nothing he won’t take home. Baez has never seen a bad pitch. He likes all of them.
I think it might already be the worst contract in the league. How do you top it? It’s cancer city in Detroit. A bright young core took a step back and we wonder why?
