Jason Kidd rips Tim MacMahon for being too negative

If you are a fan of Dallas Mavericks basketball in any way, then you know who Tim MacMahon is. He’s covered the team for over a decade and has certainly earned respect within that community as a reporter. That is by everyone except head coach Jason Kidd, who had some choice words for MacMahon in response to a question he had asked this week.

The question? Well, it was a rather pedestrian one. MacMahon simply asked Kidd about the team’s improvement late in the game, specifically from their star players. It’s a question that, if anything, would yield a positive answer; I mean, you are being asked the ways in which your team improved.

But Kidd, who has always had a fickle relationship with the media dating back to his playing days, seemed annoyed with the question.

“You wanted to make a big deal about it last year, but you’re not making a big deal about it this year because s***’s going good,” he said. “So write some positive s–t. People will read your positive s–t. You don’t always have to be negative. We can’t go back to last year. That’s the f—ing problem.”

MacMahon, who was clearly caught off guard, pleaded his case by stating he was simply asking a question, and Kidd responded with, “And I’m just giving you a f-ing answer.”

All things considered, it’s a normal interaction for Kidd and a reporter. He’s known to be harsh and irritable and just really doesn’t have a liking for reporters. Even if he is kind of right in this case, he has bigger fish to fry.

The Mavs somehow missed the playoffs last year despite having the star power of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. This is actually pretty hard to do in the current NBA, especially with the adoption of the play-in tournament, which leaves many wondering if Kidd is the problem.

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that’s the case for Kidd, who Milwaukee fired for being unable to bring them playoff success for three-and-a-half years. His time in Dallas has been very up and down, going from a conference championship berth to missing the playoffs in just one year.

No doubt Kidd has an understanding of the game of basketball. You pick up a thing or two playing 21 years, but much like with the media, his relationship with front offices usually gets worn out over time.

It’s been a good start to the year for Dallas, who sit at 11-6 and are just 1.5 games out of the top seed in the Western Conference. That should make the Tim MacMahon’s of the world happy, but the question now becomes: Does it lead to more positive reporting?

Jason Kidd has made his opinions on that very clear. Tim MacMahon is just wishing it didn’t come at the cost of a Jason Kidd “outburst.” Maybe next time, he will come more prepared with a positive question and story to pitch–maybe then Kidd will decide he doesn’t hate you. No promises, though.
