Following an altercation with a fan during an August 11 game against the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been suspended without pay for two games. The suspension is a joint decision made by both the Red Sox and the MLB. Duran will begin serving the suspension immediately, beginning with tonight’s game against the Texas Rangers.
During Jarren Duran’s at bat during the bottom of the 6th on Sunday, a fan reportedly heckled his batting ability. Duran replied, telling the fan to “shut up”. Duran can also clearly be heard in recorded videos calling the fan a f****t.
Both the Boston Red Sox and Jarren Duran have apologized profusely for the incident. Duran says he “feel(s) awful knowing how many people he offended and disappointed.” The Red Sox released a statement, saying “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity.” The Red Sox also announced that his salary from both games will be donated to PFLAG, an LGBTQ human rights organization.
This incident proves an ugly stain on an otherwise breakout season for Duran. Not only was he selected for his first All-Star game this year, he was the All-Star game’s MVP. Duran currently leads the MLB in doubles and triples, with 36 and 13 respectively. The suspension has now ruined his previously stated goal of starting every game this season, a goal he was perfectly on pace to achieve. May it serve as a reminder for him to do better.
