Back in April, former All-Star and Red Sox infielder Trevor Story dislocated his shoulder during a game against the Los Angeles Angels. Most assumed that his season was over before it had really begun. However, Boston manager Alex Cora thinks differently. Speaking before Boston’s series against the Houston Astros, Cora described Story’s plans to take batting practice as “a huge step.” He is confident Story will return to the Red Sox before the season ends.
“It’s a huge step, huge…Where we’re at right now, I’m truly believing that he’s going to be a part of this. I just don’t want to give you a timeline and all that, because I don’t want to put pressure on him. But he’s putting pressure on us, which is the great thing about this.”- Alex Cora
Trevor Story seems to share Alex Cora’s optimism about his prospective return. He spoke with reporters before Boston’s Friday game against the Astros, and told them he was “feeling good” about his shoulder. “Things have been going well”, Story said, adding “if there’s a chance to play, I’m going for it.”
Trevor Story’s time with the Red Sox has been plagued by injuries. The infielder has yet to play more than 100 games for Boston in a single season, only appearing in 8 so far this year. His April shoulder dislocation required surgery, sidelining him indefinitely. Back in 2022, Story suffered a fracture in his wrist, ending his season after 94 games. He missed the majority of the 2023 season due to a torn UCL.
Story’s possible return would be huge for the Red Sox, who currently boast the worst infield in baseball. As has been the story most of the season, Boston has struggled to carve a place for themselves in the standings. They’re currently 2.5 games out of a wild card spot, and sit in third place behind the Yankees and Orioles in the AL East.
