Jamie Benn has been the Stars/Minnesota North Stars captain since 2013-14. That could change if Benn leaves Dallas on July 1st when he’s due to become a free agent for the first time in a long time.
During exit interviews, Benn, 35, spoke about how his goal is to stay with the Stars.
“I’m going into the summer planning on playing next year,” the Stars captain said Saturday after Dallas cleaned out its lockers for the final time this season following a five-game loss to the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final. “Prepare like I do every summer like I’m going to play.”
“I don’t see myself going anywhere else,” he said. “This is all I know. Hopefully we can figure something out.”
Let’s just address the major elephant in the room. If Benn wants to stay, he needs to take a serious hometown discount. We’re talking about a guy who was cashing in at an AAV of $9.5 million over the last eight years. A guy who, while a major glue guy, wasn’t producing the point totals to warrant that type of payday. That’s a serious amount of money while playing for a team that operates in no-state tax territory. If Benn wants to stay, he should take a $3 million AAV with term, to ensure he retires with the team. At this point, Benn is a third-line player and should be treated as such on the market.
