James Bradberry To Switch From Corner To Safety

Philadelphia Eagles defensive-back James Bradberry will be switching from cornerback to safety, according to head coach Nick Siranni.

“He was able to do a couple different things last year,” Sirianni said, via Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal. “He played the majority of his career at corner and then was able to do some things at the dime, some things at the nickel, some things at the corner.

“Now he’s working some of the safety stuff. I’m excited about that, and his opportunity. You’ve seen a lot of good corners in this league [make the switch]. I guess the first guy that comes to mind is Charles Woodson. He went from elite corner to being an elite nickel to being an elite safety.”

The Eagles took cornerbacks with their first two picks in the 2024 NFL draft, signaling the beginning of the end for the one-time Pro Bowler as a corner. The Eagles selected Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo and Cooper DeJean from Iowa.

Bradberry’s main position was at the cornerback spot throughout his NFL career. In 125 career games as a corner, Bradberry registered 19 interceptions, 112 pass breakups, and 478 total tackles.

As Sirianni mentioned, other players have switched from corner to safety. A recent example of someone who did quite well in the transition to safety is former New England Patriots player Devin McCourty. In his first three seasons with New England, McCourty was a cornerback before turning into a safety. The former McCourty became a Pro Bowler during his tenure as a safety.

Eagles have been one of the most active teams this offseason. Having retained many players and brought in new faces, the Eagles shouldn’t have an issue replacing Bradberry at safety.
