It was a foregone conclusion a week ago that Derek Carr would be the new starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in 2023, leaving Jameis Winston’s future in doubt, among others. But Winston has elected to remain with the organization, finalizing a deal to return with the Saints, ESPN NFL Reporter Josina Anderson first reported Monday evening. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported shortly after that it’s expected to be an amended one-year that will be worth up $8 million.
Winston, who was originally going to possess a cap-hit of $15.6 million with a $12.6M base salary, elected to take a paycut to free up more cap-room for New Orleans, who is perpetually hopping hurdle-after-hurdle to maneuver themselves under the cap.
Winston’s played a combined 14 games — 10 starts — with the Saints after signing ahead of the 2020 season, but his stint in New Orleans has been mired by (untimely and unfortunate) injuries. He’s completed 61.0 percent of his passes for 2,103 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
He was limited to three starts last year with New Orleans after due to a back injury suffered in Week 1, which hampered his ability to perform in Week 2 and 3 before being shutdown for Andy Dalton the rest of the season. He went 73-for-115 (63.5 percent) for 858 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
The former No. 1 overall selection was not the only quarterback to sign with a team on Monday, the first day of the legal tampering period. Jimmy Garoppolo signed a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders while Jarrett Stidham inked a two-year deal with Denver. Maybe there is a way in the future where the market opens up for Winston to become a starter again, but it’s understandable why it didn’t this cycle. At least he gets $8 million, though?
This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.
