I like Jahan Dotson the player but I’m totally out on anything that has to do with drafting him in fantasy football. While it may be tempting to take a late flier on the Penn State wide receiver, odds are you’re probably just wasting your time.
If you listen to moron Daniel Jeremiah, he will tell you he thinks Dotson is going to lead all rookies in receiving yards this year. There is just a zero percent chance that happens. My track record for owning Jeremiah speaks for itself. It’s also the dumbest take you can possibly have because in the range of outcomes that exists, that just isn’t one of them.
Anyone that has learned their lesson knows even when the small receivers make it, they don’t pop right away. The only rookie receivers that step on the field and dominate day one are the monsters like Ja’Marr Chase. Dotson wasn’t a round one talent and everyone with a brain knows it.
Even someone like Terry McLaurin who’s considered smaller but still significantly bigger than Dotson wasn’t really usable in fantasy as a rookie. McLaurin has taken off as Washington’s number one and even his rookie stat line was 58 receptions for 919 yards and seven scores. Maybe it’s serviceable as a WR3 but you’re still shaking your head knowing when to start the guy. I’m not buying the idea Dotson can break that stat line which is what he will need to do to be fantasy relevant as a rookie.
Keep in mind Curtis Samuel is also on the roster. Brian Robinson was drafted to be a focal running back (who I think you should draft) meaning Antonio Gibson is getting more work in the passing game. Logan Thomas is healthy again which wasn’t the case last year. Find me the targets Dotson is getting? Find them. They don’t exist and that’s even accounting for Carson Wentz having a big year which may or may not happen.
Dotson will likely fall into the Mecole Hardman, Curtis Samuel, KJ Hamler territory. Dotson has a shot to be better than all of them but Washington still reached and everybody knows it. Even if this puppy goes on the positive end, how long did it take for Tyler Lockett to be usable in fantasy? The answer to that is about five-six years.
I just don’t get this one. In a keeper league, you’re better off letting someone else have him for the rookie contract while you take your shot if you see positive signs way down the road. Either way, there are WAY too many good wide receivers entering the league. Seriously, can you even trust Jameson Williams in fantasy given how deep the WR position is? If we’re asking those questions about Williams (who was a top 10 pick) what are we doing here with Dotson? It’s nonsense.
If you’re trying to take a dart throw on an unheralded rookie later in your draft, go for a running back. Someone like a Zamir White, James Cook, etc will provide much more value. As time goes along, running backs will be harder to find. Wide receivers very easy to find. Take the note here with Jahan Dotson or you will pay the price for it.
