In our company wide mock draft the other day (post coming soon but video can be found here) I took Jahan Dotson late in the first round with the Packers. The Penn State product is one of many talented wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft class. Maybe Dotson deserves a bit more love despite the crowded talent at the position. Let’s take a look at the Jahan Dotson 2022 NFL Draft profile!
I keep going back to this but the KJ Hamler comp is probably a good one. Hamler was the Dotson at Penn State once upon a time. Now, I do think Dotson has a bit more juice and can play way more physical which is an important plus. Still, Dotson doesn’t scream number one WR to me which is what you want out of a first round wide out.
The PA product is undersized (5-foot-11, 184). However, this dude can really run. 4.43 speed is something we will take all the time. The 36 inch vert is good enough. Dotson is a really explosive guy and actually wins at the catch point. He’s not a typical small receiver you can just bully.
It’s also really encouraging that Dotson has awesome hands. Just two drops last year and really makes the play in the air. Also comes with return ability if you want to use him that way. Already is a great route runner. Creates separation. That’s not an issue at all.
Can he develop into a slot guy? That part remains to be seen. Looks better on the outside when he can really break routes deep. Is he really going to be a YAC monster? Pretty thin and not the hardest guy in the league to tackle. Has an Odell quality to him where he can make circus catches in traffic. Really quick feet but will also enter the NFL on the older side (22).
At the end of the day, I’m in on Dotson. In a perfect world, he’s a guy you feel comfortable taking in the second round. Feels way more talented than a guy like DaeSean Hamilton. The hope is he can surpass Hamler too but the lack of size is obviously a concern.
