Jacob Eason was a 4th-round selection for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2020 NFL Draft. Now, before the offseason technically begins, he is the only QB that is under contract for the Colts now. Philip Rivers retired from the NFL this season and Jacoby Brissett is now an unrestricted Free Agent in the 2021 offseason. This only opens the door for Jacob Eason to possibly start this year. However, he has had no playing time this year or in the preseason because the preseason was canceled due to COVID-19. He knows he still needs work. His quote provided by ProFootballTalk:
“I got a lot of work ahead of me, a lot of areas to improve and grow, but if the opportunity presents itself, I’m going to put my best foot forward and give you the best shot I can,” Eason said, via Jim Ayello of the Indianapolis Star.
Many believe that the Colts may have a championship-caliber roster on their hands. I think the Colts would be foolish to not consider another seasoned QB to start. Jacob Eason has plenty of time to learn in his career. Handing him the keys with a championship roster might be premature. There’s plenty of QBs on the market that are more than capable of taking over the Colts.
Carson Wentz is presumed to want a reunion with Frank Reich. Deshaun Watson is still on the market via trade. Although, I doubt the Texans trade their star QB to a division rival. Jameis Winston might be available. Even Jimmy G might be better suited for the Colts.
It’s ambitious of Jacob Eason to think he may start this year, but I’m not sure it is realistic. Sure, work your ass off and beat out the other guys to be the starter. But, if the Colts get any of those QBs above, who thinks that Eason will actually start over any of them?
