Is Jackson Arnold actually a bust, or will he turn things around with Auburn? Check out which way I think this will go inside the post! (Jake Crandall/ Advertiser / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images)

Jackson Arnold: Will He Turn Things Around With Auburn?

Jackson Arnold failed at Oklahoma. I’m just not positive it was actually his fault. This upcoming year, we’re about to find out for sure who the problem actually was. Will Arnold turn things around at Auburn? We’re still believers in the Chinese Farmer, but here’s why you should probably be optimistic that will be the case.

Arnold, 20, posted a 12-3 TD to INT ratio last year. A number that’s actually damn good considering he kept getting benched. The downside is he averaged 5.8 yards per attempt, and he constantly looked like rookie NFL version of Bryce Young. Not overly big and overwhelmed. The year before, he stunk it up in the Bowl game, but showed plenty of talent, to where Oklahoma was fine with letting Dillon Gabriel walk. If Arnold truly sucked as a talent, the Sooners don’t feel cool with letting Gabriel walk.

That’s the thing. I don’t think Arnold sucks as a talent. He won the Elite 11 camp in high school. Now, it wasn’t exactly a loaded QB year in that crop, but he still won the day, and there was all the reason in the world to be excited for what’s to come.

Maybe.

Just Maybe.

Brent Venables is an independent contractor and shouldn’t be trusted on the offensive side of the ball?

The opposite is true with Hugh Freeze. Call him all the names in the book. I don’t care. What you can’t deny is that he knows how to recruit really good players, and his quarterbacks play well above their talent level historically. Malik Willis had no business being drafted. He went in the third round somehow and can barely throw. Chad Kelly threw for over 30 touchdowns one year, and he’s a complete knucklehead.

Why can’t Arnold get back on track? By the way, his receivers around him should be damn good. Rising sophomore Cam Colean is probably a future first round pick, and gadget guy Eric Singleton Jr. is going to be a nice, reliable jitterbug for the offense. If Arnold gets more under control and limits the turnovers, he’s going to be just fine.

And here’s the funniest part. The clock is ticking. Deuce Knight is waiting in the wings, and with the way the transfer portal is now, Arnold may be forced to speed up his development because of that. If you want to see where I have Arnold ranked among the QBs in the upcoming class… here you go.

Heed the warning!
