Jack Flaherty traded to Dodgers

Detroit Tigers ace Jack Flaherty has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, his hometown team, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan was among the first to report minutes ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline Tuesday.

According to Fansided’s Robert Murray, the Tigers will receive Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney, the No. 8 and 22 prospects in their system, respectively (MLB Pipeline), in the deal.

The Dodgers, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were the three teams rumored to be all-in on Flaherty, who’s putting up similar numbers to his elite 2019 season, where he finished fourth in the NL Cy Young voting.

In 18 starts, Flaherty has pitched to a sub-3.00 (2.95) ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and 3.11 FIP through 106.2 innings. He grades in the 94th percentile in whiff rate, strikeout rate and walk rate, according to Baseball Savant. Despite recently getting Clayton Kershaw back from injury, the Dodgers were in need of another top-of-the-rotation arm to pair with Glasnow and Gavin Stone.

Los Angeles should be thrilled at the price paid for Flaherty, a rental. It’s genuinely surprising, given the Trevor Rogers trade or the Yusei Kikuchi trade, that Flaherty–the consensus top name available in a pitching market where hauls were getting sent in return, regardless of how many years of control they had left–got traded for a fringe top-10 prospect plus another outside the top-20.

Perhaps Detroit felt it needed to trade him and didn’t have another decent offer on the table because the perceived price would’ve been exorbitant. Liranzo, a switch-hitting catcher, is not a bad flier. Though Sweeney will now be a part of his third organization in two years and hasn’t quite found the runway to climb the hill. They need more quality minor league position players, though I’m not sure this package is enough for a pitcher who’s been an ace-level arm.
