The Baltimore Orioles have acquired Miami Marlins starter Trevor Rogers in exchange for prospect Connor Norby and outfielder Kyle Stowers, MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal was among the first to report Tuesday.
MLB Network’s Craig Mish was among the first to report the loaded return from Baltimore.
This is quite the return from Miami for Rogers, three years removed from an All-Star appearance with two more years left of control after 2024.
Norby was a top-5 prospect in the Orioles’ system, arguably the best in baseball. Stowers recently graduated from the system, but was a top-10 prospect.
With the additions of Austin Hays and former top prospect Cristian Pache, Baltimore’s outfield became more crowded than it already was with Colton Cowser, Heston Kjerstad and Cedric Mullins. Stowers has been productive in limited at-bats this season, sporting a .797 OPS with four doubles, one homer and nine RBIs.
Norby’s gotten a brief cup of coffee at the MLB level, owning a .594 OPS with two homers and three RBIs in 32 plate appearances. He’s done nothing but consistently hit in the minors, so I trust him to figure it out long-term. He’s also shown he could be a potential corner outfielder at the MLB level, where he could be projected to play (once he’s called up) with Xavier Edwards and Otto Lopez manning the middle in Miami.
Rogers, 26, has a 4.53 ERA with a 4.42 FIP in 105.1 innings this season. His strikeout rate is currently the worst of his career (18.0 K%), a steep decline from his 28.6 percent clip from 2021. He’s getting hit at the hardest rate of his career with the lowest whiff rate, chase rate and velocity of his career, per Baseball Savant. Yikes!
