I’m not going to lie, I thought Ivan Provorov wasn’t playing tonight. As someone that plays fantasy hockey, I follow the lovely Daily Faceoff account. They do a great job so shout out to them. Prior to tonight’s 5-2 win for Philadelphia, Provorov was ruled out for the game after not taking place in warmups.
The only thing is Provorov very much played. It turns out Provorov declined to wear the Gay Pride jerseys for warmups so he did not take part in the team skate. Ruled out for homophobia, Ruled in by Flyers head coach John Tortorella. That’s kinda how it went, right? I’m not going to go 10-10 in the joke department, although I think this one plays.
I’m not going to sit here and pretend to be the moral police. It’s safe to say that Torts didn’t consider benching Provorov for a second for declining to wear the gay pride sweaters. Again, that’s for you to decide on that part.
The timing on this in interesting because Provorov appears to be on the table in terms of trade discussions. Does this recent occurrence change things in any sort of way? It remains to be seen if and when Provorov addresses what happened with team reporters. This story may not be over. OR it could turn into nothing and everyone overreacted. Time will tell.
The Flyers, as stated earlier, did win 5-2 tonight against a horrendous Ducks team. In 22:45 minutes of ice time, Provorov was a +1 with one shot and no points tonight. On the season, the former first round pick has 15 points through 45 games on the season.
