It’s Time For The Steelers To Fire Mike Tomlin

Hanifan does a weekly overreactions post, and maybe this would be better suited for that. Maybe I am heated because the Pittsburgh Steelers, my favorite NFL team, lost to the god-awful Patriots Thursday night.

Maybe it’s time to look in the mirror and realize that maybe Mike Tomlin isn’t cut out for this anymore. I have been a fan of Tomlin since he took over the job, but tonight showed me that enough is enough. Pittsburgh deserves better.

Nothing you see out of this Pittsburgh Steelers team should provide fans with any hope for the future. I’m sorry, but this isn’t the 70’s and 80’s anymore. The NFL has changed, and Mike Tomlin has refused to adapt. It’s three yards and a cloud of dust and hammer the other team on defense. That wins championships, right? Maybe then. But you need to score 24-plus just to be competitive in most games anymore, and a Tomlin team just doesn’t do that anymore. This offense just isn’t built for that, which when you look at the skill players, makes you scratch your head.

I really thought the main issue with this team was that bum Matt Canada. I wanted him gone bad. When they finally pulled the trigger, I really had some hope. Hell, they went out and put up 400-plus yards of offense in their first game without him! I was ready to book the Steelers in the playoffs … then the wheels completely fell off, and I believe Mike Tomlin is fully to blame.

I should have seen it coming when Mike Tomlin looked at Kenny Pickett and said, “Yeah, I can work with this.” That’s another issue for another time. Pickett is not the answer, but Tomlin is going to roll with Pickett because, on his team, he just needs a game manager. Someone to protect the ball and just do enough. Imagine this team if they really let the reigns loose. Bring in a guy with a cannon to sling it to these receivers? We as fans will never see that as long as Tomlin is there because he refuses to adapt.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans should want both Mike Tomlin and Teryl Austin fired, and if you disagree you are stuck in the 80’s as well. Wake up. This team won’t go anywhere with the current staff in place. What do I want, you ask? I want Ben Johnson as head coach, and I want 49ers Defensive Line coach Kris Kocurek as defensive coordinator. Johnson is going to cut this offense loose, and Kocurek is young and aggressive and will get the most out of this defense.

I know this is a hard pill to swallow. But you’ll live. I have faith. It’s time to fire Mike Tomlin.
