Max Scherzer Forced His Way to the Dodgers

The 2021 MLB Trade Deadline produced some crazy trades and excitement for baseball fans everywhere. One of the biggest deadline deals was completed by the Washington Nationals, who dealt three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a package of prospects. In the days since the trade, it appears that Max Scherzer forced his way to the Dodgers, who were one of many teams interested.

In the case that the Dodgers don’t win the National League West, Scherzer gives the club another option in the one-game Wild Card round. But maybe just as importantly, it took him from the Giants and Padres, who could’ve used him in the same situation.

A source told MLB.com that an American League East team had a deal in place to land Scherzer from the Nats, but the right-hander preferred playing in California and preferably Los Angeles.

Red Sox? No. Padres? No. Dodgers? Yes.

The four suitors for Scherzer up until the end were the Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and Red Sox. This means that the Red Sox were likely the AL East team in question that had a deal in place before Scherzer nixed the trade. Before the official trade to the Dodgers, a report surfaced that the Padres were also close to completing a deal. Evidently, Mad Max leveraged his way into landing in Los Angeles over Boston or San Diego.

The Dodgers currently sit three games behind the San Francisco Giants for the NL West lead. The production they get from Scherzer and Trea Turner should give them a big boost entering the final leg of the season.
