Inter Miami Signs Sergio Busquets

Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi will be teaming up yet again, Inter Miami officially announced the signing of the Spanish midfielder on Friday.

This is Inter Miami’s second big signing this summer after likely securing the biggest transfer in MLS history when they signed Messi earlier in June.

Busquets will join the club on a free transfer after leaving Barcelona at the conclusion of last season. Busquets spent 18 seasons with the Catalan giants, making 722 total appearances for the club. During this time, he won nine La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues titles.

At the end of last season, Busquets decided to not renew his contract with Barcelona and to pursue a new challenge.

Since then, multiple clubs have attempted to sign the 34-year-old. Inter Miami looked like the favorite to secure his signature after he made comments talking about his desire to play in the U.S. and Miami in particular.

However, Saudi Arabian clubs smelled blood in the water, and like they have been doing all summer, offered Busquets a lucrative deal to move to the Saudi Pro League. Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal were the clubs that held talks with Busquets over the last few weeks about a potential move to the league.

However, Inter Miami ultimately won the race and will now see Busquets reunite with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

The two spent 13 years together in Barcelona and were part of many formidable Barcelona squads throughout the last decade. The two became close friends and maintained contact when Messi moved to PSG in 2021.

Now, Busquets and Messi will reunite in Miami during the twilight of their careers.

These two may not be alone in moving to Inter Miami this summer. Jordi Alba, who also left Barcelona after last season, is also talking with the club about a potential move to the MLS. However, he is also being courted by Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Saudi Arabian clubs.

Alba is expected to take his time making a decision. He wants to represent Spain at the European Championship next season, which might influence his move.

Inter Miami is currently the worst team in the MLS Eastern Conference. They sit in 15th place with only 15 points from 17 games. Only the top nine teams make the playoffs, meaning Inter Miami has a fair amount of ground to make up.

Are Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets what Inter Miami needs to turn things around? Only time will tell, but these signings are definitely a sign that Inter Miami means business.
