Inter Miami could be getting band back together alongside Messi

Nearly 48 hours after Inter Miami made the splash of the summer by bringing in Lionel Messi, they have turned their attention to bringing in a few more players to bolster their squad.

The addition of Messi to Inter Miami is a huge boost for not only the team but the entire MLS. We are seeing the same thing in Saudi Arabia after Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to their top division. Following in his footsteps have been Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté with more likely to follow suit.

While the other 28 teams may not see an immediate influx of players flocking to them, Inter Miami very well could. There have already been four big-time players that have been made targets of Inter Miami to add talent to play alongside the Argentine World Cup winner.

The one thing that these four players have in common is that they have all played with Messi at some point in their careers. Here are four players that Inter Miami could very well sign to create somewhat of a super team in the MLS.

Sergio Busquets

Spanish midfielder, Sergio Busquets, could be the first player to follow Messi to Inter Miami. The midfielder announced last month that he would be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season. However, there has been talk of him moving to Inter Miami in the future since around the time of the 2022 World Cup last fall. Busquets, 34, is approaching the tail end of his career and a move to the MLS could see him continue to play at a competitive level.

Next season will be the first of Busquets’s senior career that he will not be playing in Barcelona. He has spent the last 18 years in the Barcelona system, including the last 15 playing for the La Liga side. Busquets has played the most matches with Messi of all his teammates, having made 567 appearances on the pitch together.

As teammates, the duo was the backbone of Barcelona’s great success throughout the 2010s. They won eight La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League titles and 18 other trophies in their time together. Inter Miami would be very fortunate to sign a player that Messi is so familiar with playing alongside. However, a possible move to Saudi Arabia could spoil this reunion as Busquets is a target of clubs there as well.

Luis Suarez

To this day, MSN is arguably one of the greatest attacking trios of all time. Now a second member of that trio could be heading to Inter Miami in the form of Luis Suárez. 90min has reported that Suárez could very well be joining Messi in the MLS, which would mark Suárez’s second move in six months after he left his boyhood Uruguayan side Nacional for Brazil’s Grêmio back in January.

Suárez played in 24 matches for Grêmio this season winning two trophies in Brazil. In the second leg of the 2023 Campeonato Gaúcho, Suárez scored the goal that would ultimately win the title for Grêmio.

MSN, composed of Messi, Suárez and Neymar, was elite at Barcelona but ended after three seasons in 2017 when Neymar moved to PSG. Suárez ended up playing with Messi for six seasons following a move from Liverpool in 2014. In all six seasons together, he scored 21 or more goals including 59 in 53 matches during the 2015-16 season. Suárez is now 36-years-old and may have just one or two seasons left, so why not move somewhere nice and play with friends?

Jordi Alba:

Another former Barcelona teammate of Messi’s that has been rumored to move to Inter Miami is Jordi Alba. The 34-year-old announced that he too would be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.

Part of his reasoning is that age is finally catching up to him and he is not the same player he once was. No better place to go than the “retirement home” that is the MLS.

Alba has spent the last 11 years of his career at Barcelona with nine of them coming during the Messi era. Signing a defender, even if he’s aging, should be a priority for Inter Miami since they have the third-worst goal difference in the MLS Eastern Conference at a minus-6.

Ángel Di María:

The only player on this list to have played with Messi on multiple teams is Ángel Di María. The forward played at the club level with Messi at PSG for the 2021-22 season, but he also plays with Messi on the Argentina National Team.

Inter Miami is considering making a move for Di María now that his contract with Juventus has expired, according to reporter Fabrizio Ramano.

As teammates at PSG, the two helped win the Ligue 1 title. By far their biggest success together was winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. In the Final, Messi scored two of Argentina’s three goals while Di María scored the other. That was the only goal that Di María scored in the tournament but none could have been bigger.

There is still a chance that Di María stays in Europe, with Benfica being interested, but a move to Inter Miami may be in the cards for a future season.
