Today I was just minding my own business when this clip appeared across my timeline. Another old white guy/lady bitching about how millennials are ruining the world. Typical nonsense. In this edition of millennials are ruining the world, we have Golic and Wingo interviewing Doris Burke. What could go wrong! Load Management is ruining the NBA apparently.
Wingo is interviewing Burke about Kawhi Leonard taking the game off against the Bucks because of load management:
Millennials are ruining the world! We expect you to play every day just like the players did in the 80’s! No more fancy travel. Make them all ride in buses across the country! Stop it. You sound dumb. I also want to put on the record that I like Doris Burke. I think she’s pretty good at what she does. I also want to put on the record that Golic and Wingo blows. It’s impossible to watch that show and not want to stick a fork in your eye. It’s a tough watch. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Golic say something smart and I was referring to both of them.
Guess what, Kawhi Leonard can take as many days off as it wants. You know why? He’s the defending NBA Champion. While the Warriors watched their players crumble in the Finals (likely from playing too many minutes) Kawhi was fresh and ready to go. You see. Load management works. In fact, if you’re not doing it with your star players, you’re franchise is dumb. Guess what doesn’t matter? The winner of the Bucks and Clippers regular-season game.
Here’s the ugly truth about the NBA regular season. It doesn’t matter. Nobody cares. Wake me up in April. I’ll still watch from time to time. You just have to know what you’re walking into. The NBA regular season is a glorified NFL preseason. It doesn’t matter. There are 30 teams. 16 of them get into the playoffs. There is no sense of urgency. It’s an 82 game snoozefest. If you can’t get into the playoffs without trying in the NBA, you didn’t belong in the dance in the first place.
Fans care about championships. Every goat argument ever has started with 6 for 6. Nobody cares what MJ did in the regular season. The players accordingly want rings. It’s why they chase titles constantly. The players don’t care about the regular season because there is no reason to. If the players don’t care about the regular season, then why should we? Especially when we have a commissioner that is very player friendly.
The NBA is about the star and they have the power because the system was created for them. This doesn’t happen in the NFL. There’s real urgency. 16 games and 12 teams get into the dance. If Pat Mahomes wants to take a few games off, well, he can’t. The difference between playing in Kansas City and on the road in the playoffs means a lot. Especially when you can secure a bye. The NBA… not so much.
The fundamental problem in the NBA is that there are too many games. Too many games that mean nothing. Greedy owners that just want more money. I don’t know how you fix it.
