The Dodgers had $5.1462 million in international bonus pool money entering the offseason. LA needed some extra help in order to land Roki Sasaki and the Phillies/Reds were happy to oblige. If you’re furious that the Dodgers landed another star, here’s exactly how they did it.
It took two minor trades to land Sasaki. One with Philly and one with Cincinnati as I mentioned earlier. Both of these minor deals got the Dodgers the International Bonus Pool money they needed.
Arnaldo Lantigua was traded to the Reds for $1.5 million in space. Lantigua is 19 and has mostly played in the Dominican Summer League so it’s far too soon to say how legit of a prospect he really is.
Dylan Campbell was dealt to the Phillies for approximately $750K or $1 million in bonus money. Campbell is 21 and will likely play in AA starting this year. He’s mostly been in A ball previously.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows for LA. They did lose out on Darell Morel (Pirates), Oscar Patiño (White Sox), and Teilon Serrano (Twins) who signed elsewhere because they landed Sasaki. They previously had agreements with those guys on the International market but obviously ran out of bonus money.
Sasaki ultimately signed for $6.5 million with LA. Because of the CBA, he was limited to the International market so it’s not like he was a true free agent. If you’re upset that the Dodgers keep getting whoever you want, just remember to place some blame on the Phillies and Reds for helping them land Sasaki. The Don’t get this deal done without them.
