The Kyle Lowry era in Miami is officially over. Lowry has been on the block for what seems like forever. Miami finally found a trade partner to strike a deal with. Terry Rozier will now suit up for the Heat following the trade to South Beach.
Rozier will head to Miami. Lowry and a 2027 first round pick will head to Charlotte.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Woj also added that the Hornets have no plans to execute a buyout for Lowry. The former Villanova product can’t sign with a tax apron team anyway on the buyout market because of the rules. Lowry, 37, is on an expiring contract and will hit unrestricted free agency after this season.
Speaking of contracts, this actually helps Miami out with the tax. Lowry was making a tick over $29.6 million. Rozier is under contract for a tick over $23 million. He’s also under contract for two more years with the final year of that deal having partial guarantees. This deal now drops Miami to $184 million in projected salaries with $190 being the second tax apron. The tax implications make this deal more feasible for Miami more than anything.
Rozier, 29, is having a career season for the Hornets. The former Louisville product is averaging 23.2 points per game on 45.9% shooting to go along with a career high 6.6 assists per game. In fairness, it feels unlikely Rozier can continue that hot streak with significantly better options around him in Miami.
Did Miami make a smart move here? Rozier is certainly an upgrade over Lowry but was this the target to go after? Feel free to comment below!
