Mexican winger Hirving Lozano, also known as ‘Chucky,’ will join the new Major League Soccer team San Diego FC.
“It’s an honor to join San Diego FC as the club’s first Designated Player,” said Hirving Lozano. “It’s exciting to be part of history as we build a club that will compete for championships in MLS. In every country I have played, I always strive to leave a mark, and leaving my mark in San Diego and MLS is very important to me.
The Mexican will join the club after winning the Eredivisie title with PSV last season. In his return season to the Dutch club, Hirving registered six goals and 3 assists in 24 games. He also won the Dutch league again in the 2017-18 season.
After winning the Dutch league back in 2017-18, the Mexican player found a move to Serie A club Napoli. Lozano won the Italian Cup and the Italian League.
Hirving Lozano will move to the MLS at 28 years old, proving to be an early retirement for the Mexican player. Lozano will be the club’s first “designated player” in San Diego’s history.
With the departure of PSV, the Mexican National Team will have one less player in Europe. The list of players gets smaller season by season and with clubs in Mexico selling their players in the league instead of exporting them out, the future of the national team is doomed.
With the 2024 Copa America beginning on June 20th, Hriving Lozano was not part of the team as he rejected the call-up so new faces could join the national team. In preparation for the Copa America, Mexico recently faced Uruguay and lost embarrassingly, 0-4.
