Growing Skepticism Teams Will Pay The Price In Trade For Mookie Betts

You can’t stop the Mookie Betts trade rumors from flowing. You just gotta ride the wave. I’ve told you over and over that it’s not going to happen. You can choose to listen. You can choose not to listen. I don’t care either way. I would bet a large sum of cash that a Mookie Betts trade won’t happen this offseason. The evidence continues to grow.

While Red Sox will likely gauge the trade market for Mookie Betts this winter, there’s great skepticism any interested team will trade a package of great prospects and pay about $28M for 1 year even for a superstar such as Betts.

Forget about the idea of trading for Betts. It doesn’t sound like teams are even willing to give up a haul to get him. In that case, you can bank on a trade not happening. Boston can cash in on draft pick compensation if he leaves. If Boston doesn’t get a haul for Betts, they won’t trade him. You can understand teams would be hesitant. Not only are you giving up prospects for a retal, you’re also eating $28 million. Teams want to spend money in the offseason. Chewing up that kind of salary on Betts takes 95 percent of teams out of free agency.

The Red Sox are looking to clear payroll. They’re not going to give up Betts for pennies on the dollar just to clear salary. Chaim Bloom is too smart. You’re not ripping that guy off. He’s the same guy that traded Chris Archer for Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow. You’re not getting Mookie Betts unless you give the Red Sox a haul. It doesn’t sound like a team will do that as crazy as that sounds.

It will be interesting to see how the Sox look to dump money. Will they look to move one of those high priced starters? Chris Sale, David Price, or Nathan Eovaldi? Jackie Bradley could be a trade target? JD Martinez is no lock to stay. We will see.
