The 2024-25 iteration of the College Football playoff is a total joke. SMU is somehow in after losing the ACC Title game to Clemson. Keep in mind, the same Clemson team that lost to South Carolina (a South Carolina team Alabama beat) the week prior. People across the Alabama program are not happy including Athletic Director Greg Byrne.
Byrne made it clear that he believes his team got absolutely hosed and cited strength of schedule as the reason why.
“Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country. We had an extremely challenging schedule and recognize there were two games in particular that we did not perform as well as we should have,” he wrote in a lengthy statement on X.
“We have said that we would need to see how strength of schedule would be evaluated by the CFP,” he said. “With this outcome, we will need to [assess] how many P4 non-conference games make sense in the future to put us in the best position to participate in the CFP. That is not good for college football.”
Alabama finished 9-3 this year and had the 11th-best strength of record. SMU was 15th in that category. Honestly, I think that’s the wrong argument to make. The real argument should be don’t lose to Clemson. A Clemson team that has established themselves as a stepping-stone program. A team that wouldn’t have even made the Conference Championship game if Miami beats Syracuse. Navigating the SEC is obviously harder than the ACC.
The real argument Byrne should be making. If the committee wants to pull this cheese, the SEC should boycott the playoff and create their own format. That threat would get more than three teams in the 12-team format. I promise you that.
