It has only been a few days from being traded and former Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams has spoken out on being traded.
Before Williams was traded away from Boston, the 6’6 forward was hoping for a long-term extension with the Celtics. But, with star guard, Jaylen Brown still needing to be signed and Kristaps Porzingis signing a long-term deal, Boston pushed Williams to the side.
“I had an understanding of that most of the way,” Williams said, according to The Athletic. “I know how the numbers work out and yeah, they could have afforded to keep me. But it’s one of those things where you’re really committing and after the prior year, I didn’t think it was realistic.“
“Hey, Boston was trying to maintain their leverage,” Williams told The Athletic. “It’s one of those where you can’t be mad at them for it because it just shows they want you to be there in a way.”

As the Celtics’ lineup got more and more stacked, Williams’ playing time slowly decreased. Another reason behind Williams getting enough playing time was because of the signing of Joe Mazzulla. Not only in the regular season, but in the playoffs, Williams’ role with Mazzulla only seemed to be in garbage time.
Last season, Williams averaged the most minutes of his career during the regular season, but that’s not all that it seems–the majority of his minutes came when the Celtics were either up or down a lot. Not great minutes for the developing 24-year-old.
In the end, Williams is off to Dallas to join the Mavericks in a three-team sign-and-trade Wednesday. The former Tennessee forward will see much more minutes and a bigger role with the Mavericks.
