Gordon Hayward: Why Do Fans Want To Trade Him? It Doesn’t Make Sense

The most bizarre thing I’ve seen out of most Celtics fans and frankly other analysts is first that the Celtics need a big man. That isn’t true at all in the slightest. To make matters worse, the first thing the NBA Twitter GMs do is throw Gordon Hayward in to try to trade for a big man they do not need. My thing is: why? I love this core and how it is shaped. Gordon Hayward plays a key role for them and it shouldn’t be tampered with.

Gordon Hayward Stats

Gordon Hayward averages 17.2 PPG on 51.7% shooting. His 17.2 PPG is 4th on the Celtics for scoring and out of those top 4 players in scoring, he has the highest FG%. So he’s your 4th scoring option with 17.2 PPG and is doing that efficiently? What is the problem here? He is also averaging 3.9 APG, which is 3rd on the Celtics, only 1.1 APG behind 1st for Boston. Finally, he’s averaging 6.3 RPG, 4th on the Celtics, BUT, only .6 behind the 2nd leader for Boston for rebounds. Why are Celtics fans and analysts alike so ready to trade him?

Gordon Hayward was never supposed to be the number 1 or 2 option for the Celtics. We knew that already. How could we expect him to be when Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum on the team. Hell, even Jaylen Brown is proving he’s a hooper too. Sure, his contract is expensive at 32 million a year. That’s pretty much the only thing I don’t like about Gordon Hayward. I would definitely restructure his contract or re-sign him for cheaper, but other than that why trade him? Not that he would even be an option.

Even though it’s not up to Brad Stevens, Brad Stevens would hate if Gordon Hayward got traded, they have history together. Did we forget that Stevens coached Hayward at Butler? Sure, Danny Ainge may consider trading Hayward, but unless he wants to piss off Brad Stevens, one of the best coaches ever, he wouldn’t dare. Be smart people, Gordon Hayward isn’t going anywhere, nor should he.
