The Golden State Valkyries Is The Name Of WNBA Expansion Team

What a fire name. The WNBA has announced the new name of the WNBA expansion team expected to join the league in 2025: The Golden State Valkyries. The name Valkyrie derives from Greek Mythology (dope as hell already). Here is what Valkyrie means as provided by Sporting News:

Valkyrie is a term tied to Norse mythology. Its specific meaning is “chooser of the slain.” It is considered to be “any of a group of maidens who served the god Odin and were sent by him to the battlefields to choose the slain who were worthy of a place in Valhalla,” according to Britannica.  Valhalla is considered Norse heaven, where the god Odin resided. Valkyrie would decide whether the soul of a deceased warrior is worthy of a place in Valhalla or not. If a soul was selected by the Valkyrie to join Odin, they would wait until Ragnarok, an apocalyptic event told in Norse mythology, to fight alongside the god in war.  “The Valkyries were important figures in Norse culture for the same reason strength and tactic were: greater success in battle,” Study.com said. “The Valkyries were an inspiration to warriors to fight in a way that was worthy of Valhalla, so this idea was just as powerful as literal power.”

I don’t care what you say, this is already the best name in the WNBA. Not only is Valkyrie a tough name on its own, but it also represents women in Greek Mythology. Playing for the WNBA, that name goes hand in hand with representing women in a very positive light. I mean “chooser of slain?” Get out of here, that’s already the hardest lines anyone could have picked. They could have the best name of all of sports, it’s that good. This is very encouraging as the WNBA is not done expanding but it looking to add a team in Toronto in 2026. What are your thoughts on the name?
