The Vegas Golden Knights drafted Daniil Chayka in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft. We’re not even through his entry level contract and the club is already cutting ties with the player. The 6-foot-3 Russian blue liner was placed on unconditional waivers by the team so he’s off the roster completely.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news. He’s also since confirmed that nobody claimed the player.
I hate to speculate because there still is some missing information here but common sense would lead you to a few possible outcomes.
A: Bad character. The team felt the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze after he probably got in trouble for doing something stupid.
B: They know it’s a blown pick and he’s never going to make their team. They tried to trade him and rival teams told them he has no value.
What else can it possibly be ^? If you think there is another range of outcome please comment because I can’t find one.
Chayka, 22, could potentially sign in the KHL and return to CSKA Moscow where he played in 2020-21. Maybe he’s done with hockey altogether. Who knows. The only thing we know for sure is that it’s a blown pick. The good news is the blue line in Vegas is so strong that they can afford to miss on a pick or two. What young player is cracking that unit right now? They have no weak links.
