In the history of women’s MMA, it is clear that Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey are the two most influential fighters of all time. Carano was one of the original pioneers of women’s MMA. Her career began in 2006 and women were not brought into the UFC until 2013. Meanwhile, Rousey played a pivotal role in the UFC adding the women’s divisions. Now in 2022, a fight between Carano and Rousey seems possible.
Earlier this month, Rousey stated that she was open to an MMA return if her opponent was Carano.
“There’s only one person I would come back for,” Rousey said (h/t POST Wrestling). “I’ve said it a million times, it’s not like it’s something new but for Gina, Gina Carano. She’s the reason why I got into fighting, she’s the reason why I knew it was a possibility. I will always be forever grateful.”

For Rousey, a potential fight with Carano has always been on the table and it has always been rooted in respect.
“It’s a respect thing, not like a, ‘F*** you. I’m coming to get you.’ It’s just like, ‘Hey, if you ever wanna pull that card out, it’s there.’ I love her. Thank you Gina for everything you’ve done.”

Rousey has not fought since 2016 and it seems unlikely that she would make an MMA return as she has transitioned into professional wrestling. On the other hand, Carano has found success in acting and has not fought since 2009. However, Carano has responded to Rousey’s proposition.
“You know what? Just never put it past me,” Carano said when asked about Rousey on FOX News. “It could happen. It would be six months from now because I have a lot of stuff I need to do.”

Despite their inactivity, a fight between Carano and Rousey would be historic. Two legends coming back from retirement to fight each other would be unprecedented. The question is, will Dana White and the UFC make this fight? Well, if it makes dollars, it makes sense, and this makes dollars.
