The Giants weren’t going to miss this time. After failing to land Aaron Judge after he re-upped with the Yankees, the Giants moved their priorities to another star, Carlos Correa. The Giants happily took advantage of the Dodgers’ ineptitude to not bid on Correa because their uneducated fan base now makes the decisions, I guess. The Giants got their guy and Correa is officially heading to the Bay.
Jeff Passan at ESPN reports that Correa will sign a 13-year contract with San Francisco to join the Giants. The overall contract will be worth a whopping $350 million.
As part of this deal, it’s also being reported that the deal contains no opt-outs. Correa also has a full no-trade clause. A pretty, pretty good deal compared to what he got a year ago with Minnesota.
The 13 years (which is insane, by the way.) takes Correa past his age 41 season. Correa, 28, sported a batting line of .291/.366/.467 a year ago. Correa is also arguably the best defensive shortstop in the sport. His 5.4 WAR was second among shortstops in 2022 just behind Xander Bogaerts.
Speaking of Bogaerts, once he and Trea Turner both got 11 years, it was no surprise that Correa leaped them given that he’s more than two years younger than both.
It stands to reason that Brandon Crawford is the new second baseman? As Crawford continues to age, it would make sense to give him an easier load at second base. Regardless, the Giants now have their superstar they have been searching for all offseason.
