It only took eight days of AAA baseball for the Giants to promote Marco Luciano. Yes, you’re reading that right. Just eight days after promoting Luciano to AAA, San Francisco is promoting their top ranked prospect to the big league club.
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report the news:
“The Giants are planning to call up shortstop Marco Luciano after just six games in Triple-A, sources told NBC Sports Bay Area. If he plays Wednesday night against the A’s, Luciano will become the second 21-year-old to debut this season, joining Luis Matos.”
According to MLB Pipeline, Luciano is the 15th ranked prospect and second ranked farm hand in the Giants system. Kyle Harrison is listed as first, but I personally disagree with that notion. Luciano has been on the prospect radar for a long time and has a chance to become a star.
In six AAA games for the Giants organization, Luciano slashed .292/.37/.625 (.995) with two home runs. Not bad! The problem is there is a lot of swing in miss in his game still. At AA this year, Luciano posted a strikeout rate of nearly 30%. The positive is that he was able to register a 14.9% walk rate to offset that. This is still a young player that has a way to go mostly still needs to develop his plate discipline. Still, Luciano is viewed as a plus defender that can provide power from the infield.
Luciano, 21, will be counted on right away. Brandon Crawford and Thairo Estrada are on the injured list and who knows when they will be back. Luciano has a chance to stick on this big league roster for the remainder of the season.
