The 2019 MLB season is over which means Gerrit Cole is a free agent. That officially starts the clock when super-agent, Scott Boras starts foaming at the mouth. It’s the offseason baby and this is Boras’ time to shine. Gerrit Cole is the big fish on the free agent market and Scott Boras is his agent. That means only one thing. Get ready for another Scott Boras con job. I wouldn’t go near Gerrit Cole with a ten-foot pole this offseason.
I want to state that I’m not automatically anti every player that is represented by Scott Boras. Just the ones that don’t filter out all of his bullshit. There are exceptions to the rule. I love Xander Bogaerts. He was one of the few guys that told Boras to fuck off, I want to sign an in-season extension with the Red Sox. Bogaerts prioritized Boston over an extra dollar or two. Anthony Rendon is also a free agent this offseason. He also told Scott Boras that he’s not running the show. Rendon said this about his free agency before the start of the 2019 season. Boras is not calling the shots.
“What everyone has the misconception of is they think that we work for Scott,” Rendon said, per MLB.com. “Like, no. That’s not the way it works. Like, I’m telling him how it’s going and you can ask him. We’ve gotten (into) some jibber-jabbers before too. Like, I’m paying him. Nah, that don’t fly with me.”
I’m good with that. Be your own CEO. Rendon is running the show. If I need a third baseman, I’m in on Anthony Rendon. Again that’s a rarity for a Boras client. If you hire Scott Boras, 90 percent of the time you’re looking for the highest dollar amount possible and you might screw yourself in the process depending on how much leverage you have. Go ask Martin Maldonato and Dallas Keuchel who ended up losing millions for being greedy Boras clients.
Enter Gerrit Cole who falls into the 90 percent category. This is a Scott Boras con job all over again. Cole isn’t over himself. He just wants to get paid. That guy didn’t give two shits that the Astros lost in the World Series. He’s looking for a paycheck. Can’t win with those guys.
You already know who this sounds like? This is Bryce Harper all over again. That was the ultimate con job. I tried to tell you Harper wasn’t that good. Well, I should clarify that Cole is significantly more talented. Still, those guys don’t give a shit about winning. Anybody that wears a Scott Boras hat minutes after losing game 7 of the World Series can’t play for me. That was planned. This guy wasn’t focused on the game. That’s shit that Odell Beckham does. He is a perpetual loser too. I want players that want to win. Not guys who want to suck Scott Boras’ dick.
Let’s be honest about the soon to be free agent starter. Cole, 29, probably already played his best baseball. Teams pay you for future production. Not past production. Cole will turn 30 in September. He’s probably given you the best production you will see. Cole went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA. That’s phenomenal. However, Cole pitched significantly better in Houston than he did in Pittsburgh. Houston is known for being ahead of the game with the data they have. The Astros turned around Justin Verlander’s career from going south. Dallas Kuechel pitched below his career averages in Atlanta with no DH.
You better be damn sure Gerrit Cole is not a product of Houston. In 2016 with Pittsburgh, Cole went 7-10 with a 3.88 ERA and 7.6 K per 9. How much is that guy worth? How about the Gerrit Cole 2017 version where he went 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA and 8.7 K per 9. How much is that guy worth? What happens when things go south and the Houston staff isn’t there to help identify the problem? How does Cole look at age 35 instead of 28? Never forget Houston helped Gerrit Cole become the guy that he is. Gerrit Cole didn’t transform Houston.
It’s going to be another offseason of Scott Boras trying to shove shit down your throat. Gerrit Cole is here for the ride. He’s too good to even where an Astros hat. Either way, you’re probably not getting your money’s worth. Especially when we have already seen the best version of Gerrit Cole. Especially for a guy that doesn’t give a fuck if his team lost in the World Series. Gerrit Cole is another Scott Boras con job. Just like the many before him. Get Gerrit Cole as far away from my team as possible.
