Chris Olave isn’t the only talented Ohio State wide receiver entering the 2022 NFL Draft. Some would argue that Garrett Wilson is actually the top dog in the draft this year. What does the former Buckeye bring to the table? Let’s go over the scouting report.
I’m a tad lower on Wilson than most of the other draft people. I think Wilson has real star potential. I just don’t think he is without faults and isn’t as highly graded as Ja’Marr Chase a year ago for me. Wilson is also a bit on the smaller side and historically those guys don’t profile as true number one targets.
Wilson has really great traits. I actually think he’s a great leaper. 36 inch vert is real. Guy can really high point and make those difficult catches. The play strength is way better than his size indicates. Feels similar to DeVonta Smith last year. 4.38 speed is obviously damn good too.
I just don’t see Wilson as smooth or polished as Olave. Less of a refined route runner. Footwork is behind. Think he will get beat up sometimes by the really physical corners.
That being said, the dude is clearly talented. Even has some return ability. Also has really big play speed and a decorated recruiting background. Really good after the catch too. Wilson will make plays after the catch.
Wilson is a first round talent all day. It remains to be seen how high given the surplus of talent entering the league. Then again, the premium targets are costing more than ever. I see Wilson as a very solid pick for any team with the chance to become a real star.
