Frederik Andersen is hurt again. This time it is a medical injury that wasn’t suffered on the ice. Andersen is out again but this time it’s because of a blood clot issue. Just awful news for Andersen but the positive is that the team is portraying confidence that Danish goalie will make a full recovery.
“During recent medical testing, it was discovered that Frederik Andersen had a blood clotting issue that needed to be addressed,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said. “There is currently no timetable for his return, but we are confident that Freddie will be able to make a full recovery.”
Also listed in that press conference, the Canes are signing Jaro Halak on a PTO. Halak, 38, has been around the block for a long time. During stints with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Rangers, Halak has gone 295-189-69 with a 2.50 GAA, .915 save percentage, and 53 shutouts in 581 games.
“[Halak has] been out there,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “With Freddie going down, we needed another guy. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got that position covered. We’re covering our bases a little bit.”
Pyotr Kochetkov is also being called up from AHL Syracuse. He’s a former second round pick with some promise. It stands to reason that Antti Raanta will get a bulk of the starts until Kochetkov proves that he’s really ready for prime time. Kochetkov is 0-3 with a .838 SV% thus far this season.
